Windemere Nursing and Rehabilitation Center (WNR) and Navigator Homes of Martha’s Vineyard (NHMV) announced the signing this week of a transfer agreement, which will ultimately allow the shifting of beds from WNR to NHMV, pending Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) approval. This is an important step forward in fulfilling the vision for a new Green House Project-inspired skilled nursing facility on property in Edgartown.
For our WNR residents and their families, this step will not change the care and services they are accustomed to daily. The same management team will continue to oversee operations, and the same staff will provide care and support at the current location on the MVH campus.
The DPH process is a parallel one to the Island’s required approvals, which are taking place now through the Edgartown Planning Board and the Martha’s Vineyard Commission.
MVH President and CEO Denise Schepici and Navigator President and CEO David McDonough said, “Our collective vision is to create a community of care for our seniors, who want to stay on the island and receive their care here. We look forward to the day with enthusiasm when we will meet this goal.”
“Windemere is not sustainable,” Schepici emphasizes. “The building is becoming outdated per DPH standards. Without a new facility, our seniors will be forced to move off-island away from family and friends who live here, and that is the last thing we want for vital members of our community.”
Navigator board member and founder of Healthy Aging Martha’s Vineyard, Paddy Moore said, “With the recent passing of Renee Lohman (President and CEO, Navigator Elder Homes of NE LLC, and Navigator Homes of Martha’s Vineyard) Navigator and NHMV promise to continue the work in her honor and memory, providing the best skilled nursing care possible to elders on Martha’s Vineyard. We owe it to them.”
Per state regulations, a public notice must be posted in a daily newspaper. The announcement will appear in the Cape Cod Times in the coming weeks.
